Ruby Runners Past, Present and Future:

This year we developed a different format for Ruby Run. Ethan and his family recently relocated to Denver, CO and want to keep the spirit of Ruby Run alive, however they are unable to host a run in Central Park for the 2012 Ruby Run. This exception will be for this year only as the move and Ruby Run timing coincided. The plan is to return to Central Park in 2013.

In the meantime, Ruby Run is suggesting you run, walk or stroll in your local community and forward a photo of your good time to RubyRun.blogspot.com. We will create a collage of photos for all to enjoy. We ask for the traditional $100 donation, which Ruby Run will collect and donate to spinal cord injury research centers. Ruby Run 2012 T Shirts will be mailed to all who send photos, donations and/or positive energy.

Thank you for making the 9th Ruby Run such a great success. Thanks to your generosity, we will continue to support a cure for Spinal Cord injury while also donation funds for daily quality of life issues. Your loyal support means a great deal to me and my family, we thank you for joining us this year. If you were not able to attend this year’s event, we sincerely hope you can join us in 2012. The History of the Run

For those of you who may be new to The Ruby Run, it is a philanthropic running event, started 6 years ago to raise money for spinal cord injury research. The run was started by the family and friends of Ethan Ruby, who was hit by a car in New York City, while walking toward a glowing walk sign. Tragically, Ethan was paralyzed from the chest down. He and so many others live with pain and loss because there is no cure for spinal cord injury. The two organizations we will be donating to this year, The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and W.M. Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience at Rutgers University, work tirelessly to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.
Ethan’s Story:“Almost 7 years ago I was hit by a car while walking toward a glowing walk sign in a New York City cross walk. On November 29th I was crossing the street around 9pm when a car ran a red light; hit a car in the intersection, and that car (actually an SUV filled with construction equipment, full paint cans, and tiles) hit me. It happened so fast and without warning that I never saw or felt a thing until I woke up on the street, screaming in pain and terrified. I was almost dead, and should have died according to the doctors (two collapsed lungs, broken sternum and ribs, and a few big lacerations across the rest of my body). Now, I have a complete T6 fracture of my spine and I can't feel or control my body below my nipples. The only thing I can feel below this level is pain, another tragic side effect of being paralyzed. I spent months in the hospital and even more time in physical and psychological rehabilitation. As I was introduced to the harsh realities of living as a paraplegic, my family and I had to face the horrifying fact that there was currently no cure for spinal cord injuries. During this time I found out about two of the leading research facilities in the world, The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and W.M. Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience. This injury led me to re-examine what holds the most meaning in my life. Family and friends have become paramount, and at the top of my list. While I continue to work, as I did before my injury, in the financial industry, I now spend a significant amount of time raising severely needed money for spinal cord research. I am determined not only to survive this devastating experience, but also to positively impact the environment around me. I thank you for your interest in helping me and so many others who suffer daily from the life long effects of living with a Spinal Cord injury. I hope to see you at this year’s run.” Ethan
